O Canada! San Diego gets its first nonstop flight to Edmonton via Swoop airline
In a first for San Diego, nonstop service will be offered starting this fall to Edmonton and a second Canadian city, Abbotsford, on Swoop, a low-cost Canadian airline.
Swoop, just a year old, will debut the new flights Oct. 4, with bookings available through April 25 of next year. The three times a week flights will be offered Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
“San Diego is an excellent addition to our winter lineup with a schedule that encourages weekend excursions by air,” said Karen McIsaac, spokeswoman for Swoop. “With some of the best beaches in California and plenty of attractions, San Diego is another example of how Swoop is bringing desirable locations at an affordable price within reach of Canadians.”
The airline is not saying whether the flights will operate beyond next spring, but it will likely be known this fall when Swoop publishes its summer schedule.
One-way fares between San Diego and the two Canadian cities will start at around $122. Currently, no other airline offers nonstop flights between San Diego and Edmonton, which is the capital of Canada’s Alberta province. Abbotsford is in British Columbia.
Swoop, which offers unbundled services to keep its fares low, flies to 18 destinations in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. The airline will be accepting the delivery of three more aircraft this year, bringing its fleet total to 10 Boeing 737-NG 800s by the end of 2019.
