Chula Vista opens new viewing deck at Civic Center Library

Deck is open for community recreational classes and private events
Chula Vista recently opened a new deck at its Civic Center Library with plans for various recreational activities for the community.
The deck, which is located on the north side of the library and overlooks the adjacent Friendship Park, offers a new, 5,000-square-foot entrance to the building and easier access to the park.
Plans for the deck include activities such as yoga, aerobics, Mommy and Me fitness classes, movie screenings and art classes, city officials said, adding that the space became available for rental July 1 for private events for Chula Vista residents and non-residents. It can accommodate up to 330 people and features shade sails.
“This viewing deck was a true community effort,” Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said in a prepared statement. “I am so grateful to many donors who supported my vision and believed in what our library could offer to the community. With sweeping views of Friendship Park and city hall across the street, it’s the perfect location and I know will be a popular spot.”
The California Department of Housing and Community Development awarded Chula Vista with a $1.3 million housing-related parks grant, which paid for most of the funding for the deck. Private donors, which included several real estate developers, covered the initial fundraising, city officials said.
The library is located at 365 F St. For more information and to reserve the deck, call the city at 619-585-5689 or 619-476-5340 or email ycheung@chulavistaca.gov or mjohnson@chulavista.lib.ca.us.
