Second City hitting town again
The Second City will make its first return to San Diego since 2014 this summer, when it brings its election-themed show “Free Speech! (While Supplies Last)” to La Jolla Playhouse.
The celebrated, Chicago-based improv troupe’s production runs July 29 to Aug. 21 in the Playhouse’s Mandell Weiss Forum.
Tickets go on sale this Sunday; (858) 550-1010 or lajollaplayhouse.org.
Second City was last at the Playhouse not quite two years ago with a holiday show. The troupe has made La Jolla a favorite stop, with offerings that have included 2013’s San Diego-specific “The Good, the Bad and the I-5.”
Here’s what the theater has to say about the new show:
“Free Speech! (While Supplies Last)” offers an irreverent look at America’s electoral insanity. This topical new show features political satire made famous by Second City stars like Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Keegan-Michael Key, as well as brand-new scenes, songs and improv straight from their sold-out shows in Chicago and Toronto.”
Playhouse artistic director Christopher Ashley added in the announcement: “Our proud national tradition of a free, democratic election process is matched only by another national tradition: poking fun at that process. Legendary comedy troupe The Second City returns once more to the Playhouse to unleash their inimitable brand of satirical humor on this unique election season.”
