Pups hang ten at Surf Dog Competition

Up to 70 “surfurs” of all shapes, sizes and breeds will hit the waves and hang 20 at the annual Unleashed by Petco Surf Dog Competition on Saturday.

Canines will compete in heats based on size: small, medium, large and extra large starting at 8 a.m. There’s also one heat of tandem dog/dog and one heat of dog/human. The event is much like a human surfing competition. Dogs will be scored on their top two waves in each heat. They are judged on length of ride, height of the wave, degree of difficulty, positioning and showmanship. In between heats, check out what’s new at the pet expo or refresh yourself at Coronado Brewing Co.’s beer garden. An awards ceremony takes place at Pier South Resort, Rooftop Deck, 800 Seacoast Drive, at 2:30 p.m.
