San Diego lends a helping hand to victims of Hurricane Harvey

Collective waves of sadness rippled through the country as Americans watched in horror at the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. While being halfway across the country can make one feel helpless, San Diegans are rising to the challenge and launching a number of charity-based events to send relief and help those in need, from people to man’s best friend.

Here is a rundown of events to attend around San Diego to lend a helping hand from afar.

Hurricane Harvey Charity Day

On Friday, Sept. 8, Good Time Design, owned by Ty Hauter, will donate 10% of all sales from a number of its San Diego venues. Proceeds from the day will go to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, part of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Participating venues include Moonshine Flats, The Deck at Moonshine Flats, The Blind Burro, Cat Eye Club, Bub’s at The Ballpark, Lucky’s Lunch Counter and The Loma Club. San Diego for Houston

In a show of solidarity for the citizens and nearby cities affected by Hurricane Harvey, popular San Diego venue Music Box is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 9. Proceeds from the event will go toward providing water, food and essentials to those affected.

Headlining the show is vocalist and former Kumbia Kings member, Frankie J. The Mexican born, San Diego native once known as “Frankie Boy,” said in a press release, “Our hearts go out to the people of Texas at this tragic time, and we are honored to take part in their recovery after the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey.”

Other musicians performing at the event include B Side Players; Osmar Escobar; Paula Deanda; and Malik.

There is a minimum $20 cover donation for general seating. Other seating is available for requested donations ranging from $35 to $100. A limited number of mezzanine seats are available for $250, or gather charitable friends for a private box that seats six for $1,500. Proceeds go to a fund set up on youcaring.com.

Beach Spin for Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund

Feel the thigh burn while hashtagging #TexasStrong for charity this Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Hotel del Coronado. A 50-minute ride is scheduled for 10 a.m. The rides will take place on the Del Paseo Lawn of the hotel and come complete with water, towel and Beats by Dre headphones blasting motivational music along with the instruction of Chelsea Wilson.

A donation of $30 is requested, with 100% of proceeds going to Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. There are limited spots which can be reserved by emailing name and preferred time to rideforrelief@jpublicrelations.com.

Hurricane Harvey Relief fundraiser

Join the folks of Sycamore Den for an evening fundraiser on Wednesday, Sept. 13 that includes drink specials featuring El Silencio Mezcal, Titos Vodka, Bulldog Gin, Cynar, Giffard USA, Jagermeister and food from the soon-to-open Bivouac Ciderworks. Along with monetary donations, patrons are encouraged to bring items for donation including clean clothes, bedding and/or unused toiletries. Also on hand will be beats from Gabe Vega, plus a special guest D, along with guest bartenders and house bartender Walker Texas Swanger.

Tacos for Texas

The recently opened Libertad in Hillcrest is donating a month’s worth of profits to help support victims of Hurricane Harvey. The not-for-profit taco shop identifies a different charity each month and for September, 100% of the profits will go to International Relief Teams, which focuses on alleviating suffering caused by poverty and disaster around the globe. The IRT has set up a fun to specifically support hurricane victims.

The Harvey Wallbuilder cocktail

The folks at Miss B’s Coconut Club in Pacific Beach chose re-imagine a disco-era cocktail and take it from a Harvey Wallbanger to a Harvey Wallbuilder - a nod to rebuilding Houston. The charity cocktail contains vodka, fresh lemon, egg white, tropical cordial and Galliano and is finished off with a stencil of the state of Texas created with aromatic bitters. For each of the $7 cocktails sold during the entire month of September, 50% of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross for Harvey Relief.

Providing shelter for pets

With the help of Southwest Airlines, vet techs from the Helen Woodward Animal Center flew to Houston to support Operation Pets Alive! and tirelessly came to the aid of a range of furry friends and pets after the storm, providing orphaned animals with care and medical exams. Approximately 80 orphaned shelter animals have returned to the center in Rancho Santa Fe to await new homes.
