Comic-Con 2015: Saturday schedule

Day 3 of Comic-Con - Saturday, July 11 - brings Quentin Tarantino, “Supergirl” and a ton of treats from Warner Bros. and “Women Who Kick Ass,” courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. U.S. Congressman John Lewis makes a return trip to Comic-Con with his No. 1-selling graphic novel, and Homer and family are back to promote the 27th season of “The Simpsons.”

A few panels were mysteriously - or perhaps purposefully - vague, so hopefully we’re in for a few surprises. (Hint, hint: Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures and 20th Century Fox!)

WARNER BROS. PRESENTATION

A “sneak peek” at a few upcoming releases from Warner Bros. Hall H, 10:30 a.m.-noon

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th-century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry, and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Sam Reilly) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper-class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield. Cast members Lily James, Sam Riley, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth, Jack Huston and Matt Smith along with writer/director Burr Steers and the book’s author Seth Grahame-Smith for a first look at Screen Gem’s adaptation of his acclaimed twist on the classic novel. Patient Zero An uprecedented global pandemic of a super strain of rabies has turned the majority of humankind into highly intelligent, streamlined killers known as ‘The Infected’. One victim, Morgan (Matt Smith), who is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected, leads the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Join cast members Matt Smith, John Bradley, Natalie Dormer, and Clive Standen along with director Stefan Ruzowitzky and screenwriter Mike Le for an exclusive first look of the film. Both panels will be moderated by Dalton Ross (Entertainment Weekly). Hall H, 12:15 p.m.-1:15 p.m.

QUENTIN TARANTINO’S THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Academy Award-winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino brings fans an exclusive look at his highly anticipated 8th film, The Hateful Eight. Followed by a Q&A session with the cast. Hall H, 1:30 p.m.-2:15 p.m.

LEGENDARY PICTURES

Filmmakers and talent from Legendary’s upcoming Warcraft and Crimson Peak, distributed by Universal Pictures, will discuss the innovative slate and present never-before-seen material. Chris Hardwick (AMC’sTalking Dead) hosts the panel that will also include surprises from highly anticipated legendary movies, including Great Wall, Krampus, and more. Hall H, 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: WOMEN WHO KICK ASS

A discussion among fierce, fearless, actresses Gal Gadot ( Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter), Kathy Bates (American Horror Story), and other flat out fantastic females, who will open up about the power and privilege of playing women who redefine the rules and refuse to yield. Moderated by Sara Vilkomerson. Hall H, 3:45 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

DARK HORSE: AN AFTERNOON WITH JOSS WHEDON

Joss Whedon has rewarded fans the world over with some of the most compelling characters and plot lines in the history of comics, television, and movies. Here’s your chance to find out what he has in store next, and get exclusive insights into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity, and much, much more. Hall H, 4:45 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

WARNER BROS. TELEVISION AND DC ENTERTAINMENT SCREENING BLOCK

DC fans, get ready for Super Hero Saturday Night! Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment welcome fans into the world of some of DC Comics’ greatest characters during a three-hour experience in Hall H. The exclusive evening will feature a pilot screening of the highly anticipated new drama series Supergirl, followed by a Q&A with stars and producers, plus individual special video presentations and Q&A’s with stars and producers from Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham. Also, don’t miss a special Q&A with cast and producers of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and a peek at the new digital series Vixen. Hall H, 8 p.m.-11 p.m.

TV GUIDE MAGAZINE: FAN FAVORITES

TV Guide Magazine brings the screams to San Diego again for this all-star, must-see panel. Moderated by senior writer Damian Holbrook, stars from TV’s hottest shows provide a lively discussion filled with behind-the-scenes scoops. Panelists include David Anders (iZombie), Yvette Nicole Brown (The Odd Couple), Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Eliza Taylor (The 100), Ming-Na Wen (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones). Ballroom 20, 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m.

THE SIMPSONS

Going into its record-demolishing 27th season! Join this panel for a sneak peek behind “Treehouse of Horror XXVI” and much, much more with creator Matt Groening, executive producers Al Jean and Matt Selman, supervising director Mike Anderson, long-time director David Silverman and the woman behind Bart Simpson, Nelson Muntz, and Ralph Wiggum, Nancy Cartwright. Ay carumba indeed. Ballroom 20, Noon-12:45 p.m.

STARZ: OUTLANDER

Ronald D. Moore (executive producer/writer), Diana Gabaldon (author), Caitriona Balfe (claire), Sam Heughan (Jamie), and Maril Davis (executive producer) discuss the hit series and preview what’s to come in Season 2. Q&A moderated by Kristin Dos Santos (E! News). Ballroom 20, 4 p.m.-4:45 p.m.

MARCH WITH CONGRESSMAN JOHN LEWIS, ANDREW AYDIN, AND NATE POWELL

His first visit to Comic-Con made national news; now the legendary civil rights icon, U.S. congressman, and #1 bestselling graphic novel author John Lewis returns. Congressman Lewis, co-author Andrew Aydin, and artistNate Powell re-team to share their award-winning March series. You’ll hear about the incredible tour that’s brought the message of March to schools, universities, libraries, and corporate headquarters from coast to coast. You’ll see glimpses of the much-anticipated March: Book Three, covering Mississippi Freedom Summer and the unforgettable Selma-Montgomery March. And of course, you’ll hear Congressman Lewis’s firsthand memories of sit-ins, Freedom Rides, the march on Washington, Selma, and beyond, and the vital power of his message of transformative nonviolence in the world today. Michael James Rocha

Michael James Rocha is the digital creative director at the Union-Tribune. He oversees the online presentation of Union-Tribune stories online and has oversight of the photo and graphics teams. Most recently, he was the arts and entertainment editor. During his tenure, the Union-Tribune’s Sunday arts section was named the best in the nation two years in a row (2021 and 2022). Michael started his career at the Union-Tribune in December 1997 as a features page designer. He eventually became the features design editor, managing a staff of 15 designers and 17 features sections. Through the years, he has done stints as the front page designer, audience development editor and home decor editor. He previously wrote a monthly column on outdoor living, which focused on outdoor decor. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications (with an emphasis on print journalism) from California State University-Fullerton in 1994. He is a founding member of the Asian American Journalists Association’s San Diego chapter, and he has taught magazine writing, editing and design at Point Loma Nazarene University. He also loves dogs.
