1. A new lightsaber
We are torn on the new lightsaber hilt. The Medieval-looking, cross-hilt saber was wielded in a trailer by what we assume can be the antagonist, Kylo Ren (
). It looks quite different from its predecessors in prior "Star Wars" films, which raises many questions. Will it have a sheath? Will the cross-hilt be usable in battle? What's the point? Only time will tell.
2. It has been 30 years since the fall of the Empire
What does this mean for the Star Wars galaxy? Who will fill the power vacuum? Is Luke Skywalker more powerful now than before? Better yet, is Skywalker even alive?
3. "Chewie, we're home"
Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) will be returning to the "Star Wars" universe. And of course, the Millennium Falcon - the most esteemed ship in the galaxy - will be making its return to "The Force Awakens." Also rest assured, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) will be reprising their roles from the original trilogy.
4. Stormtroopers are back ... with a twist?
It is apparent the Stormtroopers were not wiped out along with the Empire, as seen in the trailer. However, it has yet to be determined if they are good or evil. We do know one particular Stormtrooper named Finn (John Boyega) appears after Skywalker's quote, "The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too," which may imply that he can wield the force. If that's the case, it would be quite a surprise!
5. The return of the Sith
"There has been an awakening, have you felt it? ... The Dark Side, and the light." Although Darth Vader and the Emperor met their demise in Episode VI, The Dark Side is apparently alive and well. We can only assume from the trailer that this is the knight-like, lightsaber-wielding Kylo Ren.
6. What we know about Kylo Ren
The mysterious hooded figure does not seem to have much of a back story at this point. We do know that he has "dark side" inclinations and is possibly a prince whose driving force is the quest for total and absolute power.
7. Don't worry, the film is in good hands
Of course, there has been skepticism given that Lucasfilm will not be handling the sole production of the film. With that being said, there are plenty of bright spots for the newest addition to the Star Wars universe. Abrams, who has produced great films by the likes of "Super 8," "Mission Impossible III" and television series "Lost," will be handling the production of Episode VII. He will be joined by Lawrence Kasdan - co scriptwriter for "The Empire Strikes Back" - in the new film as well. So "Star Wars" fans: Don't fret. We expect this film to blow us out of our seats and leave us wanting more!
At Comic-Con: A panel featuring the director ( J.J. Abrams ), along with the producer and writer will be on-hand at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Hall H.
In theaters: The film is scheduled to be released Dec. 18.
