KAABOO Del Mar 2019 performance schedule and critic’s picks

Here’s the hour by hour 2019 KAABOO schedule; our critic’s picks range from Maren Morris and Wu Tang Clan to Tig Notaro and Toots & The Maytals

The fifth annual KAABOO Del Mar festival, like its four previous editions, offers dozens of musical options.

They range from the headliners — which this year include Kings of Leon (Friday), Dave Matthews Band (Saturday) and Mumford & Sons (Sunday) — to such young acts as Maren Morris, Badflower and the electronic music trio Cheat Codes.

In between are an array of veteran acts, from Jamaica’s Toots & The Maytals, Engalnd’s Duran Duran and California’s The Bangles to Squeeze, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians and today’s Night & Day cover subject, Sheryl Crow. (Ticket information appears below.)

Then there’s Friday’s joint appearance by Snoop Dogg and Wu Tang Clan, a West Coast rap meets East Coast rap jam of potentially major proportions. It could be riveting, a train wreck, or a riveting train wreck — depending on how much (or little) prep time Snoop and Wu Tang have expended to smoothly integrate their respective songs. It’s also unclear exactly which Wu Tang members will be present, since the group’s lineup can be fluid from show to show.

Still, the prospect of hearing Snoop and Wu do a live mash-up of, say, his “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and their “C.R.E.A.M.” is an enticing one.

Also enticing, at least for fans of Bruce Springsteen, are this weekend’s KAABOO performances by two of the Boss’s oldest musical collaborators.

Namely, Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul, who perform Friday afternoon, and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes, who perform Saturday afternoon. For fans of blue-eyed soul and brassy, bar-band rock, both Little Steven and Southside Johnny should get KAABOO popping from their very first downbeat.
