The debut edition of this fall’s Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival is expanding with the addition of 15 acts to the lineup, including top Atlanta hip-hop trio Migos, Spillage Village rapper J.I.D. and rising Puerto Rican reggaeton singer-songwriter Jhay Cortez. They join such previously announced performers as Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Miguel, MGMT and San Diego’s Slightly Stoopid.

The festival’s producers also announced the daily lineups for the three-day event, which will take place Nov. 22-24. Performers will appear on seven main stages and several smaller stages alongside downtown San Diego’s waterfront.

There will also be live music aboard several large vessels, which will ferry attendees between Broadway Pier and Embarcadero Marina Park South, where the festival’s northernmost and southernmost stages will be located. The full daily lineup appears below.

With the new additions, the total number of Wonderfront acts now numbers 98. The most intriguing addition is also the one that is most shrouded in mystery. It is billed as “Guitar Legends 3, featuring surprise guests,” and will be filmed by AXS TV and air as a holiday special. It is being presented in conjunction with America Salutes You, a nonprofit that raises funds for charities for veterans and first responders.

“The filming will provide great exposure for the festival going into year two,” said Wonderfront mastermind Ernie Hahn II, the longtime general manager of Pechanga Arena San Diego (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena). He is co-producing the festival with Paul Thornton, the founder of the Texas-based Tag Presents, which has produced such events as ESPN X Games Austin and Fan Fest Austin.

The “Guitar Legends 3” lineup is still being finalized. However, the previous two editions featured such six-string stars as Stephen Stills, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, PBS TV favorite Joe Bonamassa, Orianthi and former Eagles member Don Felder.

“It reminds me of the great guitar lineups that San Diego Street Scene used to have, kind of a festival within a festival,” Hahn said. He cites Street Scene, which debuted here in 1984 and was held annually until 2009, as a key inspiration for Wonderfront, which will take place following next month’s KAABOO Del Mar and October’s CRSSD festival at Waterfront Park.

Asked how advance sales are going for Wonderfront, Hahn replied: “I think they’re pretty good. It’s hard for me to tell, since it’s a first-year festival. Most of our marketing is geared now for the next 90 days, knowing the traffic of the other festivals in the marketplace and summertime being a tough time to go on sale.

“So we’re using that knowledge to make a big push coming up, at a time when we’ll be one of the only games in town. We’re definitely encouraged by the initial ticket sales and by interest from sponsors and the greater San Diego community.”

Hahn spoke enthusiastically about the support Wonderfront is receiving from the San Diego Tourism Marketing District, which is kicking in $500,000 in underwriting, and from the Port of San Diego.

He also praised San Diego sports legends Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman and Rob Machado, who are each participants, investors and event ambassadors for Wonderfront. Pop star Miguel, one of the festival’s headlining acts, has now also signed on in the same capacity as Hawk, Hoffman and Machado.

“Everybody needs to be on board to make this successful and a reality,” he said. “When you’re putting on a huge scale event like this, it requires an extreme amount of organization and a great team, which we have.

“We are super excited. So far, nothing has been too surprising, other than the fact that if putting on festivals was easy, everybody would do them.”

Tickets are available online at wonderfrontfestival.com and range in price from $229 for a three-day general admission pass to $1,200 for a three-day VIP package. Three-day passes for active and retired U.S. military members are $199 each.
