Ziggy Marley set for Del Mar Racetrack concert return
The oldest son of Bob Marley launched his solo career in the 1980s and has championed roots-rock reggae ever since.
At 50, Ziggy Marley is the oldest son of the late reggae pioneer Bob Marley.
He is also the best known, musically speaking, thanks to a near-constant recording and touring schedule.
In 1981, Ziggy and his brothers formed a band called the Melody Makers, followed by Ziggy’s 1985 solo debut, “Rebellion Rises.” He now has nearly 20 albums to his credit and has done an admirable job of establishing himself, while remaining cognizant of how challenging it to ever get out of the enormous shadow cast by his iconic father.
A talented singer, songwriter and band leader, Ziggy often performs a few classics by his father — such as “Jamming,” “One Love” and “Get Up, Stand Up” — at his own concerts.
It’s a prudent way of acknowledging the musical roots he and reggae artists and fans around the world share.
Del Mar Racetrack Concerts presents Ziggy Marley, with Ras Michael: 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Seaside Stage, Del Mar Racetrack, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar.
