Schizophonics, Trouble in the Wind, Joshua White among top San Diego Music Awards nominees
The Schizophonics and Trouble in the Wind are the leading contenders to win multiple honors at the 2018 San Diego Music Awards with three nominations each.
Led by husband-and-wife guitarist and drummer Pat and Lety Beers, the garage-rock-championing Schizophonics are nominated in the Best Rock, Best Live Performer and Artist of the Year categories.
Trouble in the Wind, whose music draws from rock, country and folk, is also nominated for Artist of the Year and Best Live Performer, as well for Best Country or Americana Album.
Close behind, with two SDMA nominations each, are jazz keyboard dynamo Joshua White, singer-songwriters Sara Petite and Ariel Levine, and the bands Little Hurricane, Buckfast Superbee and B-Side Players.
The winners will be announced at the 27th edition of the annual awards show on March 19 at downtown’s House of Blues, the event’s home for the second consecutive year. Confirmed performers for the show include P.O.D., Trouble in the Wind, Berkley Hart, Whitney Shay, Surefire Soul Ensemble and Parker Meridien.
The list of all of the nominees can be viewed below and online at sandiegomusicawards.com/nominees. Votes can be cast online through Feb. 23 at dosd.com/p/sandiegomusicawards.
The public can vote online in a majority of the 23 SDMA categories. Votes for the Album of the Year categories — which include jazz, blues, rock, hip-hop and other categories — can only be voted on by the 28 members of the San Diego Music Academy, which includes concert promoters, talent buyers, radio station veterans and other industry professionals
Tickets for the March 19 awards show are available online at ticketmaster.com, at the House of Blues box office and by phone at (800) 745-3000.
Proceeds from the awards fete will benefit the nonprofit San Diego Music Foundation’s Taylor Guitars for Schools program, which over the past three decades has provided free instruments and lessons for more than 55,000 students across San Diego County. The previous 26 editions of the show have raised $595,600, according to SDMA founder Kevin Hellman.
