Green Flash concerts at Birch Aquarium 2018 lineup to include The Fixx and Steve Poltz
The annual Green Flash concert series at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, will celebrate its 13th anniversary with monthly concerts between May and September.
The lineup for the series includes San Diego favorite Steve Poltz, who may hold the record for most Green Flash performances by a homegrown performer, and the English New Wave rock band The Fixx, which next year celebrates its 40th anniversary.
The 2018 Green Flash season kicks off May 16 with Wild Child. The Los Angeles-based band is named after a song by The Doors, whose music Wild Child faithfully re-creates on stage.
They will be followed June 20 by Poltz, who now lives in Nashville. He regards the outdoor Birch Aquarium concert venue — with its panoramic views of La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean — as one of his favorite places to perform in the country.
“There is just something special about playing next to the tremendous energy that is the Pacific Ocean,” Poltz told the Union-Tribune last year. “Every time they ask me to play, I jump at the opportunity. It’s an instant, ‘Yes,’ for me.”
The series continues July 18 with The Fixx, whose five-man lineup includes three of its co-founding members and another who joined a year later in 1980.
The Green Flash performer for Aug. 15 cannot be announced yet, which typically suggests the act in question has an upcoming show here at another venue.
The series concludes Sept. 26 with a double-bill of Venice, whose past collaborators range from David Crosby to Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters, and the Pine Mountain Logs, a classic-rock, soul and pop cover band whose six-man lineup includes at least three members of Venice.
All Green Flash concerts take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and are general-admission, standing-room only affairs. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for each show. Attendees must be 21 or older.
Advance tickets, now on sale, are $33 per concert for aquarium members and $38 for the general public. Day-of-concert tickets are $44, although a fair number of previous Green Flash concerts have sold out in advance.
Concert season passes are $145 for aquarium members and $160 for the general public. VIP Deck tickets cost $150 per person, per show, and include catered food and beverages.
Admission to each concert also includes free parking and access to all aquarium exhibits.
