Talent-packed boygenius — Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus — set for San Diego debut

Share

Three of the most promising young singer-songwriters to emerge over the past few years — Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus — have joined forces as the all-lower-case group, boygenius.

Released Nov. 9, their self-titled, six-song debut EP provides an appealing illustration of how a skilled band’s members can collectively exceed the sum of their musical parts.

While their heart-wrenching ballad, “Ketchum, ID,” is ostensibly about the realities faced by road-weary troubadours on tour — I am never anywhere, anywhere I go / When I’m home I’m never there, long enough to know — it could also be a mantra for almost any member of a restless, young generation pining for emotional connection.

By coincidence, Baker, Bridgers and Dacus are all 23 and each is gifted beyond their years. The degree of stagecraft they have developed will be displayed at their concert next Thursday, Nov. 29, at Observatory North Park, where each will do a solo set, followed by a collaborative set by the three as boygenius.

boygenius, featuring Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus: 7:15 p.m. next Thursday, Nov. 29. Observatory North Park, 2891 University Ave., North Park. $23-$25. (619) 239-8836. ticketweb.com
