Guns N’ Roses to release enormous, $999 ‘Appetite for Destruction’ box set

The best-selling debut album ever released by any American rock band, Guns N’ Roses’ career-making “Appetite for Destruction,” will be celebrated anew this summer with an enormous box set, “Appetite for Destruction: Locked N’ Loaded.”

The most extensive version of the box set will feature 73 GNR recordings, nearly 50 of which are being released for the first time. The songs from the original album have all been remastered — as have dozens of other selections — for the box set, which in its most expensive form will cost a whopping $999. (That’s a bargain, though, compared to last year’s 38-pound “Gene Simmons: The Vault Experience,” for which the co-founder of Kiss charged $2,000 for the least pricey version and — gulp! — $50,000 for the most expensive.)

The full song list for each version of GNR’s “Appetite for Destruction: Locked N’ Loaded” box set appears below. Of particular interest to fans will be more than two-dozen unreleased demo recordings from the band’s 1986 Sound City sessions, two early versions of “November Rain,” and GNR’s cover version of such disparate songs as the early Elvis Presley hit “Heartbreak Hotel,” Aerosmith’s “Mama Kin” and acoustic and electric versions of the Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” .

“Appetite for Destruction: Locked N’ Loaded” will be released June 29 by Universal Music in multiple configurations. The original 12-song album, which came out in 1987, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. It features such hard-rocking classics as “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Welcome To The Jungle,” “Paradise City,” “Nightrain” and “Mr. Brownstone.”

The most lavish option is the “Super Audio Deluxe Edition.” Housed in a 12 inch by 12 inch by 12 inch solid wood box wrapped in faux leather, it includes “four CDs, one Blu-Ray disc, a dozen 12-by-12 lithographs and a 96-page book featuring photos from GNR singer Axl Rose’s personal collection.

The super edition also comes with five custom buttons with variation of the band’s logo, five custom hand-sculpted metal cast band skull face rings, a bandana, a replica of the band’s first stage banner from the mid-1980s, a two-inch “collector’s coin, two 24 by 36-inch wall posters and a 12 by 24-inch Robert Williams painting lithograph, six replica flyers and three replicas of ticket stubs.

And there’s more, including “two temporary tattoo sheets featuring life-size tattoos of the band members’ tattoos, six iron-on stitched patches; five metal-stamped guitar picks of the band skull faces (with stamped signatures on the back), and a partridge in a pear tree.

Just kidding — there is no partridge in a pear tree in the box set. But it does come with “a turntable mat, a microfiber vinyl cleaning cloth, a 7-inch large-hole custom adapter” and “a 32gb metal-cast USB stick with 192kHz/24-bit, 96kHz/24-bit, and 44.1kHz/16-bit uncompressed audio files of all of the tracks included on the 4 CDs.”

Did we mention that it also includes seven 12-inch vinyl LPs and seven seven-inch singles?

The most compact version that will be available is a two-CD set.

The box set will come out approximately two years and two months after three of GNR’s founding members — Rose, lead guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan — got back together to tour for the first time since 1993.

That tour, billed as “Not In This Lifetime,” concluded its first U.S. leg with a sold-out Aug. 22, 2016, concert at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. By the end of 2017, the tour had grossed $475 million, making it the fourth most lucrative concert trek by any act in pop-music history. The tour included a San Diego encore show, last November, at Valley View Casino Center.

GNR will resume touring — apparently still with hired hands in place of original drummer Steven Adler and original rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin — on June 3 in Berlin. The band will remain on the road in Europe through late July.

The big question now is if the five original members of GNR will reunite for a tour. Ine the meanwhile, Slash is set to perform as part of the 2018 KAABOO Del Mar festival, where he will be accompanied by Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators.
