Jack Tempchin, Molly Jenson join Alex Woodard in writing new ‘For the Sender’ songs for Belly Up concert
San Diego singer-songwriter Alex Woodard doesn’t have a shaggy-dog story.
But the 2008 death of his beloved black labrador, Kona, led to his heartfelt 2012 book and album, “For the Sender.”
Subtitled “Four Letters, 12 Songs, One Story,” it was inspired by letters he received from people he had yet to meet, but whose stories of loss and tenacity inspired Woodard.
Now, two book-and-album sequels later, he is set to perform his annual “For the Sender” concert, which this year takes place Tuesday at the Belly Up.
Woodard, Molly Jenson and 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominee Jack Tempchin have each written new songs — based on letters Woodard recently received. They’ll perform them, along with selections from all three “For the Sender” albums.
The other performers include Jordan Pundik of New Found Glory, Tim Flannery, Nena Anderson, Graham Nancarrow, Switchfoot leader Jon Foreman and Nickel Creek co-founders Sara & Sean Watkins. Proceeds will benefit the Team Red, White & Blue Surf Camp for Veterans.
“For the Sender — Holiday Show”: 8 p.m. Tuesday. Belly Up, 143 South Cedros Ave., Solana Beach. $18 (must be 21 or older to attend). (858) 481-8140. bellyup.com
