Nominees announced for San Diego Music Awards

Three San Diego bands that have made an international impact - blink-182, Pierce The Veil and Switchfoot - are among the top 2017 San Diego Music Awards nominees.

This will be the first edition of the annual awards fete since 2015, after a reorganization of the San Diego Music Foundation - under whose auspices the awards are presented - led to 2016 being skipped. Nominees in all 22 categories appear below.

The Poway-bred pop-punk trio blink-182 is nominated for Song of the Year (for “She’s Out of Her Mind”) and Album of the Year (for “California,” the trio’s first album since Matt Skiba replaced band co-founder Tom DeLonge). In December, the new-look blink earned the first Grammy Award nomination in a career that dates back more than two decades).

Pierce The Veil, which last year celebrated its 10th anniversary, is nominated in the same two categories as blink. The Bay Park quartet received nods for Song of the Year (for “Circles”) and Album of the year (for “Misadventures”).

Switchfoot, which last year celebrated its 20th anniversary, is also vying in the same two categories, with nominations for Song of the Year (for “Float”) and Album of the Year (for “Where the Light Shines Through”).

Neo-R&B singer Andra Day, who earned two Grammy Award nominations last year, is nominated for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year (for “Cheers to the Fall”).

At least four other San Diego artists also earned two nominations apiece.

Jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos is nominated for Artist of the Year and Best Jazz.

Singer-songwriter Steph Johnson is nominated for Artist of the Year and Best Jazz Album (for “Music is Art).

The band Schizophonics - which features ace guitarist Pat Beers and won two prizes at the 2015 San Diego Music Awards - is nominated for Best Rock and Best Live Performer.

Hirie - the reggae group led by singer Patricia Jetton - is nominated for Song of the Year (for “Renegade”) and Best World Music Album for “Wandering Soul”).

The winners of the 2017 San Diego Music Awards - the event’s 26th edition - will be announced March 21 at House of Blues. Confirmed performers include Hirie, Schizophonics, The Verigolds, The Creepy Creeps, Gilbert Castellanos and the Young Lions Orchestra and Steph Johnson & the Voices of our City Choir.

Online voting runs from Jan. 16 through Feb. 26 at The public can vote in every category except the eight best album categories, which is voted on by members of the San Diego Music Academy. Tickets for the March 21 awards fete go on sale Monday through the event’s website.

The 2015 edition of the San Diego Music Awards included 28 categories. That number has been streamlined to 22 this year, following the combining of several categories and the elimination of the Best Music Video, Best Hard Rock, Best Hard Rock Album, Best Club DJ and Best Cover Band categories.

The recipient of the Country Dick Montana Lifetime Achievement Award has not yet been announced.
