Local bands compete for trip to Spain

A local battle of the bands competition is rewarding one lucky winner with an international trip and chance to perform in Barcelona, Spain.

The Hard Rock Hotel San Diego kicks off the fifth annual Hard Rock Rising competition today, March 19 as nine local bands go head-to-head in a series of four heats over the next few months.

This worldwide search for aspiring musicians on the verge of stardom boasts quite the prize worth battling over. The all-expenses paid trip to Barcelona, Spain includes the chance to perform at the first Hard Rock Rising Barcelona music festival this summer.

The first heat begins tonight inside 207 at 8 p.m. featuring The Whiskey Circle, Buddy Banter and Glasmus. Heat two takes place on Thursday, April 2 with Vudu Fly, Blackout Party and Gone Baby Gone. Heat three is set to take place on Thursday, April 16 at 8 p.m. with Barbarian, Gunner Gunner and DNT. The finals, with the bands to be determined, takes place on Thursday, May 7.

The competition will be judged by Tim Pyles of 91X, TJ aka Timothy Joseph of 949; and Robbie and Burkey of Vokab Kompany. The public is welcome to watch with free admission through RSVPs (here) or $5 at the door.
