Finn Wolfhard, the 15-year-old actor best known for his roles in the Netflix series Stranger Things as Mike Wheeler and 2017’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s It, is already getting used to battling a new kind of monster — fronting a rock band.
After releasing their debut single, City Boy, last month, the Wolfhard-led Canadian 4-piece, Calpurnia, is set to drop its first EP, Scout, on June 15.
A self-assured, surprisingly accomplished, and nicely sequenced collection of songs, Scout isn’t afraid to revel in its influences. Black Lips, Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd aren’t bad places to start. But more than straight homage, the flourishes of vocal harmonies and tight solos throughout Scout hint at a band wise beyond its years, and one that should have no problem finding creative footing.
Calpurnia features Ayla Tesler-Mabe on guitar, Jack Anderson on bass, Malcolm Craig on drums, and Wolfhard on vocals and additional guitar.
The idea to form a band was born a few years ago when Wolfhard and Craig randomly met on a video shoot for Toronto punks PUP. The pair met Tesler-Mabe at music summer camp, and she introduced them to Anderson.
The band recorded its 25-minute, 6-song EP with Twin Peaks frontman Cadien Lake at the end of last year, and Lake is currently overseeing their debut full-length album — set for release later in 2018.
Only four live dates are currently scheduled (sadly none in San Diego), but the band will be as close as the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood this June.
