When KAABOO Del Mar revealed the music lineup for its second annual festival a few weeks ago, festival promoters promised that additional local and emerging artists would soon be revealed.
They recently made good on their word with the announcement of the new Tourmaline Emerging Artist Stage and the return of KAABOO’s Discovery Tour.
The stage will feature 11 acts based in cities from L.A. to Atlanta and runs a diverse range of styles. Currently, there’s only one San Diego-based act in the group - country sextet Nancarrow.
Surrounded by quality players, singer/songwriter Graham Nancarrow (son of longtime San Diego TV journalist Loren Nancarrow) fronts the band with a voice that exudes authenticity beyond his 28 years.
And soon, three other local acts will join him.

As it did last year, KAABOO will be partnering with the music app GigTown to hold the KAABOO Discovery Tour - a structured “battle of the bands,” which is also sponsored by DiscoverSD, at four venues in the upcoming weeks. Three of the shows will determine the final three spots on KAABOO’s music roster on Sept. 16-18, and the other will give one local comedian the chance to perform alongside KAABOO’s extensive comedy lineup.
Two of the music finals have been booked at Little Italy’s Music Box and Quartyard downtown, the latter having sent local powerhouse singer KI and her band to the big stage last year. (Singer/songwriter Tolan Shaw also made the KAABOO lineup in 2015 thanks to the Discovery Tour.)
The lone comedy date and the initial music stop will take place in July, but venues are being worked out.
Prospective bands and comedians can make submissions until June 23 and all finalists will be confirmed by June 30. Visit kaaboodelmar.com/discovery-tour/ to apply.
