UFC Fight Night: Mir vs. Duffee in San Diego
UFC will bring an action-packed card to Southern California when two of the heavyweight division’s toughest fighters, former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir and knockout artist Todd Duffee, collide.
The heavy hitters will meet at the Valley View Casino Center on Wednesday, July 15.
This will be UFC’s first visit to San Diego since August 2010. Tickets for the event at Valley View Casino Center went on sale on Friday, May 15.
Mir, with a 17-9 record, is coming off a devastating first-round finish over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in Brazil in February. Additionally, Mir holds the record for most wins in the UFC heavyweight division and has one of the most feared ground attacks in UFC history.
Mir’s continuing success follows his nearly career-ending motorcycle accident in 2004. After fighting to recover both physically and psychologically, Mir returned to competition in 2006.
“In our society, people are paralyzed by failure,” Mir said. “I had the fortitude to keep moving forward. I rose to the occasion when my back was against the wall.”
Las Vegas based Mir is looking forward to the event in San Diego, a city where he has enjoyed vacationing with family. He’s excited to return via a high-caliber UFC fight that he believes will pit brawn versus brain.
For the July fight against Duffee, getting the fight to the ground will be key for Mir in this classic grappler vs. striker matchup, as all of Duffee’s wins have come by way of knockout.
Duffee (9-2, from Boca Raton, Florida) owns the fastest knockout in UFC heavyweight history, :07 second KO over Tim Hague at UFC 102. He is coming off an impressive first-round finish over Anthony Hamilton at UFC 181 last December.
In other competition July 15 at Valley View Casino Center, one of the sport’s fastest rising stars, No. 13 lightweight contender Al Iaquinta (12-3-1) will meet hard-hitting, 11th-ranked Bobby Green (23-6). Additionally, former STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion and ninth-ranked Josh Thomson (20-7, 1 NC, fighting out of San Jose, California) makes his return to the Octagon against The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 winner, No. 12 Tony Ferguson (19-3).
Also on the July 15 UFC card in San Diego is a welterweight clash, a women’s bantamweight bout, a featherweight scrap and four other bouts.
