Take your pup to summer surf camp this weekend
Take one look at your panting pup, and you know that this heat wave is no joke. His fur coat sure isn’t doing him any favors, either.
This Sunday, June 26, you two can cool off at the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Surf Dog classes held at Del Mar’s Dog Beach. Classes will take place at 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon.
The classes are taught by the SoCal Surf Dogs, which originally started to prep pooches for the annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon (scheduled for Sept. 11 this year). The lessons have since expanded to accommodate pros and beginners alike.
Each lesson will begin with 20 minutes on land, familiarizing all with the surf and the sand. Next up, the dog and owner will be paired with a SoCal Surf Dog instructor for 30 minutes of riding waves. Yes, you will be getting in the water with your furry friend!
If your pup prefers smoother waters, there will also be stand-up paddle boarding classes. SUP classes will take place in the Del Mar Dog Beach Channel at the 8:30 a.m. time slot, when the waters are most mellow.
Surf classes are 50-minutes long and SUP classes are 70-minutes long. All classes cost $45 with a 20% discount offered off any additional lessons and include the required canine life-vests and surf or paddle boards.
Classes will continue on July 10, July 31, August 14 and August 28. Dogs who take to the waves are encouraged to register for Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 11th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon on Sept. 11, 2016. All proceeds from the classes and the annual competition go towards the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.
