Hockey returns to San Diego this weekend

The San Diego Gulls play at Valley View Casino Center. (K.C. Alfred)

It’s been nearly a decade since San Diegans could say “It’s hockey season” and attend a game without driving to Anaheim or beyond. But the sport is back, and it should be better than ever. This edition of the Gulls is the top minor-league affiliate for the NHL Anaheim Ducks. They will play 68 games in the American Hockey League, with 34 at home (25 on Fridays or Saturdays). A pregame tailgate will be held for all Saturday games starting at 5 p.m. Fans will receive a commemorative ticket on Opening Night.

7:05 p.m. Saturday. Valley View Casino Center, 3500 Sports Arena Blvd., Midway District. $18-$100. (619) 359-4730 or
