Quiet rooms give some people peace of mind. They give me anxiety.
That’s not to say that I don’t love a good spa. In fact, I’m sort of obsessed with unplugging at a day spa as often as my wallet allows, constantly seeking a respite to recharge, find some me-time and maybe, just maybe, leave a little calmer and more centered.
To be honest, I have the attention span of a five-year-old after inhaling a Pixy Stick of pure sugar, but I also have this weird innate desire to make myself uncomfortable and on occasion, stop moving to just breathe. It can sometimes be disastrous. I one time spent an exorbitant amount of money to only leave the spa immediately after my treatment because I just could not sit still.
Like a workout regimen, when you find a spa experience that works for you, it just clicks. I found my true fit at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego’s Rock Spa when they rolled out their newest addition, a music-filled spa menu, dubbed “Rhythm & Motion Treatments.”
These seriously rocked my world.
As the world’s first fully immersive music-centric spa menu, the folks at Hard Rock know that they are doing something a bit unusual. Electric guitar on the massage table? Check. Bass-blaring subwoofer below the table? Check. Treble beats bouncing down from a dome above? Check and check.
The playlist has been preselected by the Hard Rock’s team of music-geeks, transitioning from rock ‘n’ roll tunes towards experimental sounds that vibrate all around. I could see this giving someone out there a headache, so proceed with caution. It gave me, however, the quickest mental escape to relaxation that I have ever experienced.
During the Synchronicity massage, I drifted off to the roaring guitars of legendary rock artists (I would name them here, but I completely zoned out. #reporterfail). The massage therapist moved in rhythm to the songs, and sent me on a journey that was unlike anything I’ve experienced before. This was a total trip.
The lesson here is that there is something for everyone seeking a little R&R out there. It might take a few tries to find what helps you unplug, but there’s not too much lost in the journey (unless you are adamantly opposed to serious relaxation).
This week on DiscoverSD, we profile other weird and unusual spa treatments, help you find bliss with your significant other, roundup some great affordable spa day options and of course, spotlight some of the top luxury resort spas.
