With Chargers fans feeling the ache of utter limbo, citizens of San Diego must rally nonetheless for one of two teams in this year’s legendary Super Bowl 50. With a fair number of Broncos fans in the SoCal area, Panthers fans might not get a lot of love here. But whether you are for the orange and blue or the blue (I say teal) and black, there are craft beers to support your screams of triumph and defeat.
For you lovers of the mountains, streams and really good football, please, please don’t drink Coors Light. Try harder. Popular Colorado craft breweries including New Belgium, Oskar Blues, Great Divide and Avery line the shelves and taps of most craft beer bars, bottle shops and grocery stores in San Diego.
New Belgium: Your choices are limitless, with their energetic rotation of brews, including the current seasonal Side Trip, a Belgian-style pale ale (La Folie, their classic sour brown ale, is my all-time favorite).
Oskar Blues: Keep all of your fellow fans happy with the easy going Dale’s Pale Ale, while hopheads will love the Gubna Imperial IPA. For hardcore fans, the Ten FIDY Imperial Stout is a must buy and a perfect nightcap on a win.
Avery: White Rascal is an unbeatable top pick for its low alcohol and crazy-good drinkability. Don’t even think about buying Blue Moon when there’s this Wit around.
Planning a Colorado-themed bottle share? Be sure to seek out the show-stealing sours from Odell including Friek and the recent Pina Agria, the classic Modus Hoperandi from Ska, and if you know people, one or two of the exceptional Barrel-Aged Series from Avery (consider yourself blessed to taste any of these).
Here’s the funny twist to this historical sports showdown. Two of the most popular breweries in Colorado, Oskar Blues and New Belgium, have built or are building breweries in the mountains of North Carolina. Simply put, if you drink either of these Super Bowl Sunday, you are ultimately supporting the rival too. But let’s just drink craft beer and focus on the game, shall we? For those looking for worthy NC-based brews, check out:
Duck Rabbit: While their range is large, your best bet for a find here is their popular milk stout, available at specialty bottle shops around San Diego.
Foothills Brewery: Fantastic suds from this Winston-Salem based brewery with possibly the best label art in craft beer. Often seen at bottleshares and in the cellars of craft beer geeks, try to get your hands on the Sexual Chocolate, an appropriately seductive and sinfully delicious imperial stout, which received a perfect 100 on RateBeer.
