Ferrell to play in Dodgers-Padres game today

Break out your peanuts and Cracker Jack, cause it’s one, two, three strikes ... from Will Ferrell?

Actor and comedian Will Ferrell is expected to play an as-yet unknown position during the Padres’ game against the Dodgers on today at Peoria Stadium, the U-T has confirmed.

The plan is part of a grand scheme, as first reported by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, to play all nine positions during Cactus League games ... in one day.

There are ten teams on the schedule, and Ferrell reportedly will be shuttled between games by helicopter.

The Dodgers-Padres matchup would serve as the finale, as it is the latest game on the docket. Thursday’s start time was recently moved to 6:15 p.m., an adjustment from the original 1:05 p.m. slot to accommodate a request by Major League Baseball, which is collaborating with HBO to film a special Thursday in Arizona.

Here are the Spring Training games Will Ferrell is reported to be playing in on March 12.

12:05 p.m.: Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics (HoHoKam Stadium)

1:10 p.m.: Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Tempe Diablo Stadium)

2:10 p.m.: Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks (Salt River Fields at Talking Stick)

4:05 p.m.: San Francisco Giants at Chicago White Sox (Camelback Ranch)

6:15 p.m.: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres (Peoria Stadium)

The production, which will include live tapings at four other spring-training ballparks, is dedicated to the fight against cancer and cancer awareness. In addition, the performance also is intended to honor Bert Campaneris, who was the first to play all nine positions in a major league game five decades ago. According to MLB.com, Campaneris is scheduled to be on hand for Ferrell’s feat.

Tickets for Thursday’s game, which will be produced by MLB Network and simulcast on Fox Sports San Diego, are available at padres.com. Right-hander James Shields is scheduled to start for the Padres.
