Beauty business raises eyebrows

Share

Natashah Torki not only grew up with great eyebrows, but also with a passion for business. When Natashah graduated from high school in 2005, her family opened Beauty By Dolly. She started out as a receptionist and later moved to “browtist.” Soon after, all of San Diego was making appointments to get their brows threaded by her. Natashah left to attend UCLA in 2007, but would periodically come back on weekends and holidays to help out. When she graduated in 2009, Natashah was excited to start taking a bigger role in the business and start implementing what she had learned in school. Soon after, the family successfully opened its second location and launched its own brow product line. She is passionate about educating clients and employees about the correct way to go about hair removal and sharing tips for anyone looking to start a business.

Q: Explain why having great eyebrows is so important?

A: Great brows are so important because they literally frame your face. Imagine this: You have an amazing wedding portrait where everything is just immaculate, but then you put it in an old, dingy frame that’s dusty and uncared for. That goes for your eyebrows. They frame your face, so even if everything else is perfect ... the eyebrows are what stand out and bring everything else together!

Q: Who has a better tolerance for waxing and threading, men or women?

A: This is funny. Women have an overall better tolerance than men do. However, women will be vocal when something is painful. Men on the other hand could be dying inside and keep quiet, because in their minds it’s “unmanly” to be in pain, especially over something as simple as eyebrow threading, or a back wax.

Q: Best part about doing business in San Diego?

A: The best part about doing business in San Diego is that we are in San Diego! We are in an eternal paradise, and I am so grateful for that. Also, the fact that we live in such a beautiful city, during the summer months we get to meet such amazing tourists from all over the country and world.

Q: What’s another part of your beauty regimen, besides getting your eyebrows done, that you can’t live without?

A: I cannot live without massages and mani/pedis. These three are an absolute must for me. Massages are my guilty pleasure. I will usually coax some of my employees into getting a massage after work; it’s something I can’t live without.

Q: If you weren’t running Beauty By Dolly, what would you be doing?

A: If I wasn’t running Beauty By Dolly, I would probably be working in LA at a TV network. I turned down an internship at a large TV network to come back and follow my passion.

Q: What are your favorite websites to waste time on and why?

A: Some of my absolute favorite websites are IntotheGloss and Refinery29, because I love beauty and always want to read and know about the latest advancements and things buzzing in the beauty world. Love, Olia, because she is not only a friend, but also a San Diego-based blogger that takes amazing photos and covers the latest in the fashion world. ASOS, because I have an online shopping addiction where I just need to know what’s new, cute and hip.

Q: If someone were to play you in a movie, who would it be and why?

A: If someone were to play me in a movie, it would have to be Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra because, one, I love her; two, I love how she immerses herself into her roles; and three, she is such an amazing person as a whole, I can’t imagine anyone else who would do a better job.
