The sound of a faint, droning pipe in the wind tells us that the Scottish and Scottish-at-heart will be gathering this weekend in Vista for the annual San Diego Scottish Highland Games. About 10,000 people gather for the event where clansmen compete in various competitions, including bagpiping, drumming, highland dancing, athletics and sheep dog trials. Entertainers bringing music of the Scottish Highlands and Celtic tunes of Ireland include Wicked Tinkers, Highland Way, The Ploughboys and first-timers to the games, Golden Bough. A Whiskey Tasting will be held at 11:30 a.m., 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday; 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $15.

San Diego Scottish Highland Games: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. Presale tickets: $5-$13. Gate tickets: $5-$15. sdhighlandgames.org
