Whoa! Ponies as public art pop up in unexpected places

Share

Have you noticed vividly decorated, life-sized horse statues popping up all over the place? In designs reflecting both thoroughbred racing and classic San Diego culture, 20 horses can be found in prominent locations as public art. This, in celebration of the Breeders’ Cup — the world class event staged in Del Mar for the first time this weekend. Several artists were tapped to embellish the seven-feet high and seven-feet long fiberglass horses — replicas of the Giambologna sculpture that adorns the Breeders’ Cup trophy. Soon, the “Art of the Horse” statues will be auctioned to benefit community charities. Until then, check the website to discover the location of each sculpture and for information about each artist.
