Ye Scallywag! festival set for Waterfront Park
Is Waterfront Park becoming the go-to site for outdoor music festivals in San Diego?
On Oct. 1 and 2, the grassy bay-side site that surrounds the San Diego County Administration Building will host the fourth edition of CRSSD Festival, a two-day electronic music fete that has sold out two of its three previous installments.
Twenty days later, on Oct. 22, Waterfront Park will host the debut of a day-long music, craft beer, wine and food festival with the colorful name of Ye Scallywag! The 21-and-up festival will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ticket information appears below.
Ye Scallywag’s crusty, pirate-styled moniker might suggest it would be a better fit for the historic Star of India sailing schooner, which is docked just across the street from Waterfront Park. But the Star of India would be an unlikely - and far too cramped - location for the festival’s mosh-friendly lineup, which includes such veteran SoCal punk-rock favorites as NOFX, Bad Religion and Goldfinger.
Also confirmed to perform are the bands Against Me!, Reel Big Fish and Wakrat, the new group formed by Rage Against The Machine/Prophets of Rage bassist Tim Commerford. By coincidence, Prophets of Rage performs here Oct. 15 at Sleep Train Amphitheatre.
In addition to the music, Ye Scallywag! will feature “more than 100” craft breweries and artisan wineries. Participating wineries include William Hill (Napa Valley), Dry Creek (Sonoma), Rebel Coast (Paso Robles), Chronic Cellars (Paso Robles) and Maggio and Old Soul (both based in Lodi).
At least four of the breweries on the initial list of participants hail from San Diego - Burning Beard Brewing, Fall Brewing, Modern Times and Mikkeller. Other confirmed breweries thus far include Anaheim’s Bottle Logic Brewing and New England’s Clown Shoes.
In a statement released Monday morning, NOFX lead singer and bassist Fat Mike quipped: “When I started NOFX in 1983, I dreamed of being a scallywag one day, at least by the time I was 50. Well, not only am I a scallywag, but I’m also playing the scallywag festival!
“P.S.: What’s a scallywag? Is that like being a pirate?”
The festival is a collaboration between Laguna Hills’ Synergy Global Energy, Orange County’s Brew Ha Ha Productions and San Diego radio stations 91X-FM and KFM-BFM 100.7.
“We are bringing in some of the most sought after and award winning breweries in the country, as well as some incredible wineries from Paso Robles, the Napa Valley, Central Coast and beyond, all set to the music of artists like Bad Religion,” said Ye Scallywag! co-producer Cameron Collins of Brew Ha Ha Productions.
A limited amount of Ye Scallywag! pre-sale tickets, priced at $45 each, go on sale Tuesday through Thursday through eventbrite.com.
Tickets to the general public, priced at $50, go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. Early entry admission tickets cost $65 each, while VIP early entry tickets cost $99 each. The highest-priced option is backstage VIP tickets, priced at $199 each.
Attendees can enjoy complimentary craft beer and wine samples during early entry tastings (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and general admission tastings (noon to 4 p.m.).
