Taking back Highland Avenue: National City embraces lowriders

More than 25 years after the city of National City banned cruising, the pastime returned to the South Bay city last month (on Sept. 21) as part of an inaugural car show at Kimball Park.

  • K.C. Alfred  U-T Kayakers float above a group of leopard sharks in the clear, shallow water of La Jolla Shores on Sunday. Named for their striking appearance, the sharks have dark, saddle-shaped splotches along the fins and upper body. Four to 5 feet in length, they aren’t a threat to humans.

  • Barrio Logan seamstress Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski is making hand-made face masks from her sewing studio "Sew Loka" in Barrio Logan from instructions on the CDC website. On Monday morning, March 23, she was busily sewing the six pieces including the two elastic straps, in to completed masks. A crate with the mornings production sits at the side of her sewing machine.
