‘Steel Magnolias’ returns to big screen for 30th anniversary

Laugh and cry along with Ouiser, Clairee, Truvy, M’Lynn, Annelle and Shelby when the 1989 classic “Steel Magnolias” returns to the big screen for a limited engagement to commemorate its 30th anniversary.
The film stars Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts as close-knit friends in a small Southern town. Screenings — part of Fathom Events’ TCM Big Screen Classics Series — will be held at more than 600 movie theaters all over the nation, including several in San Diego County.
The film garnered a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for Roberts, who portrayed Shelby. If anything, sit for two hours and five minutes and enjoy Southern repartee from Dukakis’ Clairee: “Well, you know what they say: if you don’t have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me!”
“Steel Magnolias”: 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. today. 7 p.m. Tuesday. 7 p.m. Wednesday. Various movie theaters across the county. $12.50. fathomevents.com/events/tcm2019-steel-magnolias-30th-anniversary-1989
