How to watch the Olympics on TV (and elsewhere)
There are two primary reasons viewers in San Diego and elsewhere on the West Coast will see far more live coverage of the Winter Olympics than in most previous years.
One is a decision by NBC not to delay its prime-time coverage for the western part of the U.S. Beginning Thursday, the network’s evening show will be live in all time zones, starting at 5 p.m. on the West Coast (except for 4 p.m. on Feb. 11 and 18).
The other is the 17-hour time difference between South Korea and San Diego. Since 5 p.m. Thursday here is 10 a.m. Friday there, and Olympic organizers have moved some marquee events (particularly figure skating) to the daytime, the prime-time shows will have multiple live events.
It all starts Thursday with the team figure skating competition in prime time on NBC (which will also have delayed coverage of other events). Also, NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will have live mixed curling events during its broadcast, which begins at 3:30 p.m.
Thursday is a short night, with NBC’s coverage scheduled to conclude at 8:30 p.m. But beginning Saturday, NBC will be on the air in the Pacific Time Zone until 10 or 11 p.m. NBCSN also will be showing events most nights at the same time, continuing into the early morning hours. And CNBC and USA Network will be utilized as well for curling and hockey.
All events, including Friday’s Opening Ceremony (3 a.m. PT), will be streamed live at NBCOlympics.com or the NBC Sports app. You’ll need to be a paying cable or satellite subscriber, or a subscriber to a service such as PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, Hulu, DirecTV Now or YouTube TV.
The Union-Tribune will be providing daily schedules (in PST, of course). Here’s what to see Thursday and Friday (info from NBC):
