HGTV’s House Hunters looking for Southern California family for new season
One of the popular house hunting shows is coming to Southern California and trying to recruit a family.
HGTV’s “House Hunters Family,” a spin-off of “House Hunters,” is looking for a family with children between the ages of 7 and 15.
The Southern Californian families should be passionate about a home search and have “fun, opinionated personalities and interesting stories,” HGTV said.
Searching for a home in San Diego could prove logistically challenging for the show. Homes stayed on the market an average 31 days in 2017, and the median home price rose 9.1 percent in a year to $540,000 in December.
Still, the show’s precursor “House Hunters” often features affluent buyers. In an episode that aired in September last year, the show followed a 30-year-old aerospace engineer and a venture capitalist with a $1.2 million budget looking for a home on the coast. He bought a home in Bay Ho for $735,000.
Many San Diego house hunters have been featured on the show, including a couple planning a wedding in 2013 with a $550,000 home budget searching for a “large house with an ocean view,” said the show’s description. They settled on a four-bedroom home in Clairemont for $550,000.
Families leaving San Diego for a better deal elsewhere often show up on the network. In season 4 of “Fixer Upper,” a show about people buying old homes that are remodeled for them, typically in the Waco, Texas area, a family from San Diego was featured. They had a budget of $375,000 to buy a four-bedroom house with a large yard.
“House Hunters” has received criticism for recruiting buyers who are already in escrow on house, meaning a decision has been reached before the show starts filming. The shows producers said that is done to speed up production time.
Still, the release from “House Hunters” sent to the Union-Tribune did not say families had to already have settled on a house so it is unclear how it will go when the show films. Interested participants can email hgtvfamilycasting@gmail or apply online at www.3amigoscasting.com/househuntersfamilycasting.
As part of the application, participants are asked to upload family photos, give their price range, name and age of children, describe family dynamic and explain why they are moving.
