The Capitol Steps brings its political and musical satire to San Diego
The political and musical satire troupe The Capitol Steps is back in San Diego tonight for a one-night engagement. Its new show — called “Orange is the New Barack” — mixes comedy and song and standup that “lampoons our modern political leaders, taking on the major issues of the day and sharing songs from the group’s newest album.” What began in 1981 as a troupe of mostly congressional staffers, The Capitol Steps now is made up for theater professionals. The 90-minute performance will feature new favorites like “Small Hands” (sung by Melania, to the Pointer Sisters’ “Slow Hand”) to “Tweet Tweet” (to the tune of “Rockin’ Robin,” inspired by the President’s tweetstorms).
The Capitol Steps: 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11. Spreckels Theatre, 121 Broadway, downtown. $39–$59. (619) 235-9500 or spreckels.net
