In the wings: ‘The Father’ gets a West Coast premiere at North Coast Rep
North Coast Rep is staging the West Coast premiere of Florian Zeller’s time-bending, mystery-laced play “The Father,” about an older man whose faltering grip on memory shakes up his life and relationship with his daughter.
NCRT artistic chief David Ellenstein directs James Sutorius, Robyn Cohen, Matthew Salazar-Thompson, Jacque Wilke, Richard Baird and Shana Wride in the piece, which was nominated for a Tony Award as best play in 2016.
“The Father” — whose subtitle is “A Tragic Farce” — was translated from the original French by Christopher Hampton. The play premiered in 2012 in Paris; its subsequent Broadway production won a Tony for actor Frank Langella in the lead role.
