After one full run of their first musical and a joking vow never to produce a musical again, Steven Parker and Steven Brandon dove into a new project that would leave audiences with grinning faces and rolling heads (don’t worry, that’s not meant literally). With success from their previously adapted production “Lost: the Musical,” the duo of Stevens decided to combine their producing talents once again with HBO’s hit show for “Game of Thrones: the Musical.”
Unlike “Lost: the Musical” that packed all six seasons into two and a half hours, “Game of Thrones: the Musical” focuses on the first book (and in turn, the first season of the HBO series) of the popular George R. R. Martin set. Though this production is more narrowly focused, Parker explained that it was difficult to condense all of the action.
“It was a challenge to streamline,” he said. “There are 10 episodes we condensed into one hour and 25 minutes. Which scenes are most important? Which battles do the audience want to see live?”
“How do we get dragons on stage?” Brandon asked.
Nevertheless, Parker and Brandon found a method to their madness and opened the curtain on their first Los Angeles production of the show only seven months after they began writing. Like the television series’ multitude of actors, “Game of Thrones: the Musical” features two very talented casts.
“Our actors are divided into two houses (Lannister and Targaryen),” Parker said. “They are a very collaborative group. They’ve incorporated in their own jokes, and we’ve been able to integrate their talents.”
As July approaches, this enthusiastic cast and crew will make their way to San Diego’s Tenth Avenue Arts Center to perform eight shows during the bustling Comic-Con week.
“It’s going to be an exciting time in San Diego,” Parker said. “There will be ‘Game of Thrones’ cast members in town, so we have invited certain people to attend our shows. We also have a long standing offer that any ‘Game of Thrones’ cast member is welcome to fill in for one scene if they would like.” (Peter Dinklage, if you’re reading this we’re talking to you.)
The San Diego production begins Thursday, July 20 and runs through Sunday, July 23. With only four days of shows, guests can expect to be entertained from the moment they arrive with drinks at the bar, live entertainment on the roof and many other surprises.
Though the musical is tailored to fans of the series, Parker and Brandon welcome both fans and newcomers of “Game of Thrones.”
“We do make inside jokes and references to any season of the series, but people new to the series will definitely enjoy it,” Parker said. “It’s a comedy introductory course to ‘Game of Thrones.’”
Tickets are $30-$99, and a percent of the proceeds will benefit The Wayne Foundation, an organization dedicated to spreading awareness and helping victims of sex trafficking in the United States.
