Barrel Republic, the beer bar that started in Pacific Beach with a “freedom to pour” concept, celebrated its third anniversary in November with the Oct. 29 opening of its third location in Carlsbad and a slew of celebrations and San Diego Beer Week events.
For the official third anniversary parties at all locations, Barrel Republic teamed up with Belching Beaver and Artifex Brewing to brew a commemorative beer. Their taps also featured special brews from each brewery, including Barrel-Aged Dammed, Barrel-Aged Horchata, a Brett IPA and a peach sour ale.
Other SDBW events included a Hop Nation tap takeover that featured some of San Diego’s hoppiest beers from a variety of local breweries. They also teamed up with Stone, Coronado Brewing, Mike Hess Brewing, Ballast Point and Modern Times throughout the week.
As if three years in Pacific Beach and successfully opening locations in Oceanside and Carlsbad aren’t enough reasons to celebrate, Barrel Republic also was recognized recently by Draft Magazine as one of the 100 best beer bars in the country - it was one of just five bars in San Diego County to make the list.
“My top moment at Barrel is being honored as part of an elite group,” said Pacific Beach Manager Mike Mauger of the recognition. “I’m so excited for [owner] Dave Pike and his team to get to that point in just his first three years.”
The newest addition to the Barrel Republic family is located in the Carlsbad Village. With 52 taps and a full food menu of upscale pub fare, it’s poised to be just as popular as the Pacific Beach and Oceanside locations.
The freedom to pour concept, where guests pre-pay and get a wristband that tracks how many ounces they pour themselves from the taps, is proving attractive - especially in a region such as San Diego where there are so many beers to choose from.
Luckily for beer lovers who love their options, Pike is planning to open two more Barrel Republic locations in 2017. Keep an eye on what’s going on in the Barrel Republic family at barrelrepublic.com.
