Bus stabbing sends victim to hospital with life-threatening injuries, ends in arrest

A gruesome knife attack aboard a Greyhound bus Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 5 left one man hospitalized with grave injuries and another man in police custody, authorities said.

The altercation erupted a little before 12:30 p.m. aboard the northbound bus in the University City area, where the bus was passing through on its way from San Ysidro to Oceanside, according to San Diego police spokesman Billy Hernandez.

The suspect fled but was later detained near Thornton Pavilion and Jacobs Medical Center on the east side of the UC San Diego campus.

The chaotic events on the bus also prompted the driver to suddenly try pulling off the freeway, causing two other vehicles to collide, California Highway Patrol spokesman Jim Bettencourt said. Minor injuries were reported in that crash.

During the fight, 35-year-old Gilbert Dominguez allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the 27-year-old victim several times, San Diego police Capt. Kevin Mayer told OnScene TV. It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the violence.

A bus passenger with blood splattered on her dress said the victim was clutching his neck and throat area as blood spurted from his wounds.

“He was holding his hands on his throat. He was really bloody. There was blood all over the bus,” Elena Mendoza told OnScene TV.

Police initially said the victim’s injuries were life-threatening, but later said he was expected to survive.

Upon noticing the altercation, the bus driver pulled over — causing the crash — and the fight surged toward the front of the bus, Hernandez said. The driver intervened and was able to push the suspect out.

Dominguez ran up a freeway embankment toward the medical plaza on the east side of the UCSD campus, where he was arrested in a campus parking lot, Officer Robert Heims said.

Dominguez was still being questioned by police Wednesday evening and had not been booked into jail as of 6 p.m.
