A three-car pileup Wednesday evening shut down all westbound lanes of state Route 52 near Kearny Mesa for more than an hour as firefighters worked to rescue the occupants of at least one of the cars.
The collision was reported a little after 5:30 p.m. approaching the Interstate 805 interchange, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.
Helicopter news footage showed three sedans involved, with the middle car mangled from both ends as San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighters worked to rescue its occupants.
There was no immediate information about the severity of any injuries.
All lanes of westbound SR-52 were shut down a little before 6 p.m. and motorists were being diverted onto I-805, according to Caltrans. All lanes were reopened around 7 p.m.
