Why this month? Storms churned along the West Coast, but none of them ventured far enough south to bring much more than a few sprinkles to the region. The low-pressure systems that soaked the north, however, were close enough to San Diego County to pull up plenty of mid- level and high clouds from the southwest. The best sunsets usually occur when mid-level clouds are present, either alto-stratus or alto- cumulus (8,000 to 20,000 feet high). The region had those clouds in spades this month. They produced the deep red colors. The higher cirrus clouds, which are actually ice crystals, created the bright yellows and oranges. If there are too many clouds, or if they’re in the wrong position relative to the sun, the sky won’t burst with color. There needs to be an opening in the clouds on the western horizon at sunset, or on the eastern horizon at sunrise. Without that opening, the clouds will just appear gray. The sun sets on a breezy afternoon in La Jolla on Nov. 27, 2017.
