Weezer and Pixies announce joint 2018 tour

Weezer and the Pixies are joining forces for a joint 2018 concert tour that will open on June 23 in Tampa and conclude Aug. 12 in Phoenix. The Wombats will open the first leg of the tour.

The itinerary includes an Aug. 11 stop at Mattress Firm Amphitheatre in Chula Vista.

The two guitar-driven alternative-rock bands bands have performed together before. But this will apparently be the first time Weezer, which was formed in 1992, and the Pixies, which was formed in 1986, have teamed up for a tour.

“We’re all big Weezer fans,” Pixies leader Black Francis said in a statement released Thursday morning. “So we’re really looking forward to this summer. We have a lot of respect for Weezer, they’re not afraid to take risks with their music.”

Weezer’s most recent San Diego performance was Sept. 15 at the KAABOO Del Mar festival. The Pixies’ most recent San Diego performance was April 22 at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU.

Tickets for the Weezer/Pixies tour go on sale Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. local time to the general public, preceded by an array of pre-sales
