Tony Gwynn honored with stretch of freeway

On Monday morning, a section of Interstate 15 -- between Scripps Poway Parkway and Camino Del Norte -- was named Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway in honor of the late Padres Hall of Famer.

Gwynn, who lived in Poway for many years, died from cancer in 2014 at 54-years-old.

"The Gwynn family thanks you very, very much," said Alicia Gwynn, Tony's widow. "The North County is where we live and where our kids grew up. It's a route we take every day so it's very fitting for the cause."

The first sign can be seen just north of Camino del Norte along the 15 south, and the second is located south of Scripps Poway Parkway when traveling north on the 15.

"I know he's looking down probably cackling about having his own piece of highway," Tony Gwynn Jr. said. "I know he would thoroughly enjoy it."
