San Diego marketing agency celebrates 15 years

For 15 years, Alternative Strategies has been helping San Diego businesses achieve such successes by putting the power of media exposure, branding and advertising to work for them.

Founded by William Lopez in 2000, Alternative Strategies is an award-winning, full-service marketing communications firm. This noted adviser brings together public relations, graphic design, Web design, advertising, marketing and social media to provide clients with a truly coordinated communication campaign.

“Our clients love the fact we are a full-service agency,” Lopez said. “There have been times that we take on a client who was working with three to four agencies or individuals to fulfill the services we provide our clients.”

Lopez, who holds a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and a master’s and doctorate in education from Northwestern University-Chicago, founded his firm without ever having worked in an agency. Since then, Alternative Strategies has grown from a single employee to a full staff of 19 communication professionals with expertise in public relations, social media, marketing, and both graphics and web design.

“We partner with our clients to ensure their overall brand is best represented across all marketing channels,” Lopez noted.

Alternative Strategies is proud of the many local businesses it has helped shine over the years. Many of its promotional campaigns have been recognized for outstanding merit within the industry, but it is the awards for promotional efforts on behalf of important nonprofit causes of which Lopez is most proud.

“Alternative Strategies received a first-place award by the American Marketing Association in the Cause Marketing Category for our work with The Children’s Museum,” he said. “Our agency managed their capital campaign, which included PR, marketing initiatives and creative services.”

Additionally, Alternative Strategies received three awards for its MADD Campaign, including creative, copywriting and photography. These awards are just a small portion of the accolades the agency has garnered for its work over the years.

More important than awards, however, is what Alternative Strategies has learned about helping clients succeed during its first 15 years. Staff have come to understand the importance of believing in their clients and always being honest with them, Lopez said.

“To be successful for our clients, it requires our team to be passionate about who we represent,” he said. “You quickly learn it requires honesty with clients to help them succeed.”

After a decade and a half of growth, Lopez noted there is still plenty of opportunity for Alternative Strategies to put the power of branding, media exposure and a high-impact online presence to work for both new and existing clients.

“I hope to see our agency continue to be a leader in implementing best practices for our clients, that we remain relevant and challenge ourselves by expanding our client roster with new industries,” Lopez said.
