When giving to your favorite foundation, you always hope that word of mouth or your reason for giving helps inspire others. But what if I told you there is now an app that not only allows you to give to your favorite charity but also helps spread the word about your good deed and helps you track the influence your effort is having on your family and friends? That’s exactly what Elizabeth Dreicer was hoping to do when creating givn.
Givn is a social sharing tool that is powered by Posiba, a data and analytics platform for the foundation and nonprofit sector. Dreicer founded Posiba in 2013 and recently created givn because of her passion for improving lives and society through the effective use of information. Thanks to givn, donors spread the word when they give, and nonprofits expand their message to people they might not otherwise reach and can track social influence.
Q: What would you tell your 10-year-old self if you had the chance?
I would tell my 10-year-old self to thoroughly enjoy childhood. To play fully, dream more and worry less about what others think.
Q: Motto you try to live by?
I always do my best. Be helpful and work to make the world better.
Q: CEO or company you admire and why?
Elon Musk because he’s willing to take on hard problems, solve them technically and do what it takes to make them real in the world.
Q: Describe your perfect day in San Diego.
There would be nothing on my calendar. I’d love to wake up before the sun, meditate, read something inspirational, hang out with family, walk on the beach, listen to music and have friends over for dinner.
Q: So far, which nonprofit do you believe has received the most out of givn?
There are many nonprofits that are benefiting from givn and donors are becoming champions for their cause using their social media. In fact, approximately 20 percent of donors’ close friends will follow them into a donation... if they know their friend is a supporter. It is even better if the way friends find out is through a post that doesn’t directly ask for support. This is one of the key ways that givn works better than the ways that have come before. And, the great news is that each nonprofit gets to see exactly how much additional support they’re getting as givn has smart reporting.
Q: If you could bring three things to a deserted island, what would they be?
A knife, a water purification canteen and a Kevlar tarp.
Q: Charity or nonprofit that is your favorite and you stand behind?
There are many worthy nonprofits, it is impossible to pick just one. In fact, we are better off thinking about the issues we care about: human rights, animal rights, the arts, environment, economic prosperity, equity, clean water, foster youth and building a portfolio to support a number of worthy organizations. Two great places to start thinking about which charities should be in the portfolio you want are Great Nonprofits (greatnonprofits.org) and Charity Navigator (charitynavigator.org.). Nonprofit ratings and portfolio building capabilities will also be available via the givn app. Ratings and diverse charity portfolios are two key pieces to creating a vibrant, engaged and altruistic society.
