Tune town: A spotlight on San Diego musician The New Regime
San Diego can rock and roll with the best of them - and not just because of the earthquakes. From Jewel, Switchfoot and P.O.D. to Tom Waits, Rocket From The Crypt and Andra Day, this fair city has produced more than its fair share of top talent over the years.
Here’s a look at The New Regime, a local musician that’s worth tuning into now.
About the musician
Ilan Rubin: bandleader, drummer (and drummer in Nine Inch Nails)
Established: 2008
Genre: Alternative rock
Record label: Command Music
Biggest hit: “I wish I could answer that question. Let me get back to you on that one.”
Worst day job: “The only job I ever had outside of playing music was giving drum and guitar lessons when I was in high school.”
If it weren’t for music, I’d be: “Having a really hard time figuring that out.”
What’s next: “I’m in the recording phase for my third solo album as The New Regime right now. I’m playing a July festival date with Nine Inch Nails in New York.”
Of note: In addition to The New Regime and Nine Inch Nails, Ilan Rubin’s other credits include albums and tours with Paramore and Angels & Airwaves.
“I want to take my music as far as I possibly can. I think my music is diverse, creative and smart, and there’s something there for everybody. It can’t be pigeonholed.”
