Kickass entrepreneur: Sand Cloud
When you live in San Diego, you can’t help but be inspired by the beautiful coast and all the ways you can enjoy it.
Two people who really believe this are Brandon Leibel and Steven Ford, who became friends at San Diego State University. They both began corporate careers where they met Bruno Aschidamini. It didn’t take long for the three to realize that living the corporate life was not for them.
They always loved and appreciated a beach lifestyle and together they created Sand Cloud, a beach towel brand. Their main focus is creating unique, innovative towels that cater to all types of beach- goers. That includes a beach towel with a pillow in it and their Festival bag, a backpack that converts into a towel.
And while these guys are all about creating fun beach products, they also donate 10 percent of their profits to organizations such as the Surfrider Foundation. They also have a team of over 3,000 ambassadors and lifestyle photographers all over the world that help spread the word on their fun, laid-back lifestyle brand.
Q: Motto you try to live by?
Leibel: Hard work brings luck
Ford: Give expecting nothing thereof; This has been one of our philosophies for Sand Cloud. It’s all about spreading the good vibes.
Aschidamini: Everyday is a Monday.
Q: What was the inspiration behind Sand Cloud?
Leibel: Creating better beach towels, and starting a company that matches our lifestyle.
Q: If you weren’t running Sand Cloud, what would you be doing?
Leibel: I would be trying to break into the movie business in LA. I love storytelling, and I majored in television, film and new media in college.
Ford: Traveling and experiencing as many different countries and cultures as I possibly can while documenting the adventures.
Aschidamini: Working a boring desk job, counting every minute until the day ends.
Q: Favorite product within Sand Cloud?
Leibel: My favorite product is the pillow towel since it was our first product. It’s super comfortable, and reminds me of our early days.
Ford: The Festival Bag Towel. I use it the most. Super convenient to carry all my stuff to the beach and then when I get there I already have the towel!
Aschidamini: The Festival Bag Towel. It’s a backpack that converts into a towel. I use it for surfing and hiking. The great part is that I always have a towel when I use my backpack. I use the towel for picnics and towel changing when I go surfing.
Q: Company or CEO that you admire and why?
Leibel: I look up to Mark Cuban a lot because of his straightforward approach of dealing with issues. He doesn’t sugar coat anything, and I think that is truly a great quality in a leader.
Ford: Steve Jobs. He was a true visionary of his time, the ability he had to not only see a new opportunity in the market but execute on his ideas was inspiring.
Aschidamini: My brother Samuel Aschidamini, the owner and CEO of Break Point FC. He has helped our company grow so much. I talk to him almost everyday and bounce ideas off him, which have really helped Sand Cloud grow.
Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
Leibel: I would want the ability to read minds so I can avoid miscommunication for good.
Ford: The ability to slow down time. I find myself constantly running out of time to do everything I need to do throughout the day. If I had the ability to slow it down, it would mean ultimate freedom.
Aschidamini: To breath underwater. I love to surf and free dive, and it would be nice to be able to hold my breath forever.
Q: Three things you would take to a deserted island?
Leibel: Water, family, music.
Ford: Phone loaded with music, friends and family and a Sand Cloud.
Aschidamini: My Sand Cloud Pillow towel, Sand Cloud Bag Towel and a water filter.
