It’s the first big night of Comic-Con with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Walking Dead’

Comic-Con International’s first big day Friday, July 22, will feature the cast and crews of two major franchises: “The Walking Dead” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

The new highly anticipated show from Amazon Prime Video, “The Rings of Power” — a series set in the “The Lord of the Rings” universe — will host the first big takeover of Hall H with producers and cast members. AMC’s popular “The Walking Dead” will host a panel for its flagship show, preparing its final season, and a separate panel on a new spin-off, “Tales of the Walking Dead.”

Famous actors Keanu Reeves and Wesley Snipes will have events for new projects, and legendary comic creators Rob Liefeld and Frank Miller will host their own panels. Marvel Studios will also be on hand, but for its animated shows, ahead of an anticipated takeover of Hall H for movie announcements the following day.

Dan Slott

It’s 10 in the morning. Dan Slott has a spotlight panel and is probably groggy. If you ask him the right questions, he might slip up and accidentally give away something important. How can you pass that up? He’s written Ren & Stimpy, Batman, She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, and the longest-ever run of Amazing Spider-Man. Ask him anything. Also, this will be the first panel where you can ask him questions about his NEW ongoing Marvel series . . . which will have been announced by now. Yeah. You know you’ve got questions about that! ‘The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power’

Prime Video’s new series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” from the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map. Rob Liefeld

Comics legend Rob Liefeld (Deadpool, Cable, X-Force) records his podcast Robservations live from SDCC 2022. Room 7AB, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Frank Miller

The legendary artist/writer Frank Miller is regarded as one of the most influential and awarded creators in the entertainment industry today, known for his intense, and visceral storytelling and gritty noir aesthetic across comics, novels, and film. His transcendent and groundbreaking works include “Ronin,” “Batman: The Dark Knight,” “Batman: Year One,” “Sin City,” ’300” and more. Recently, Miller launched Frank Miller Presents (FMP), an independent publishing company focused on creating and curating a line of comics that will prioritize developing and producing work with the industry’s greatest and rising artists. Join Miller for a one-on-one interview and Q&A session. Room 6A, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios head of streaming, television and animation Brad Winderbaum; head of visual development Ryan Meinerding; and special guests dive into all things animation with exclusive looks at “X-Men 97,” “Marvel Zombies,” “What If…?” season 2 and more. Ballroom 20, 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m.

‘Tales of The Walking Dead’

Introducing a new series within “The Walking Dead Universe, cast and creatives discuss the anthology of life-and-death, high-stakes survival within Tales of the Walking Dead. Cast will appear to discuss their exploration of unique stories within these stand-alone episodes focused on both new and established characters within the walker apocalypse. Creators will share their thoughts on single-episode storytelling, and cast will share behind-the-scenes anecdotes about these stories. Plus, view the premiere of the series’ trailer. Hall H, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Genndy Tartakovksy’s Primal

After winning five Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program, Genndy Tartakovksy’s Primal returns to Adult Swim. Animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars) and art director Scott Wills (The Ren & Stimpy Show, Samurai Jack) dive deep into the second season of the acclaimed animation adventure. Lucasfilm Publishing

From the days of the glorious High Republic to the Age of Rebellion to the time of the fearsome First Order, join some of Lucasfilm Publishing’s all-star authors as they discuss stories from throughout the entire Star Wars saga, including reveals, announcements, and sneak peeks. Featuring Kristin Baver (Timelines), Cecil Castellucci (Star Wars: Moving Target), Adam Christopher (Shadow of the Sith), Claudia Gray (The High Republic: The Fallen Star), George Mann (The High Republic: Quest for the Hidden City), Beth Revis (The Princess and the Scoundrel), Cavan Scott (The High Republic: The Rising Storm), and Kiersten White (Padawan). Paper Girls

From Amazon Studios, Legendary Television, and Plan B comes Paper Girls, a coming-of-age sci-fi adventure series based on the bestselling graphic novels by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. The cast, creators, and executive producers present an in-depth look at what to expect from this Prime Video series, debuting on July 29. Paper Girls is a high-stakes personal journey following four paper girls—Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and KJ— who are out on their delivery route in the early morning hours after Halloween 1988 when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. ‘The Walking Dead’

Cast and creatives of the flagship series The Walking Dead discuss the highly anticipated remaining episodes of the decade-long apocalyptic drama. Celebrate the monumental journey of this beloved series and characters as we follow their arcs in the final eight episodes of this epic final season coming to AMC and AMC+ this fall. Hasbro Star Wars

Members of the Hasbro Star Wars Marketing & Design teams discuss the popular Hasbro Star Wars line, including the Black Series and The Vintage Collection. Attendees will get an in-depth look at Hasbro’s latest action figure and premium roleplay offerings from throughout the saga. Word on the Holonet is there may also be a few surprises. ‘For All Mankind’

Kelly Lawler leads a conversation with creators and executive producers Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi are joined by executive producer Maril Davis and cast members Joel Kinnaman, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Sonya Walger, Krys Marshall, Cynthy Wu, Casey Johnson, Coral Peña, Wrenn Schmidt, and Edi Gathegi to discuss the propulsive third season of the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ alternate reality series. 60 Years of Spider-Man: A “This Week in Marvel” Special Event

Ryan Penagos (a.k.a. Agent M, VP and creative executive) and Nick Lowe (VP and executive editor) are joined by the one-and-only Dan Slott (Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four) and some surprise panelists for a special live episode of the “This Week in Marvel” podcast. Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR

Since its record-breaking debut in 2021, the BRZRKR comic has been thrilling readers with its story of the half-mortal, half-god warrior as he battles through the ages, seeking answers to the mystery of his endless blood-soaked existence, and how to end it. Keanu Reeves joins series co-writer Matt Kindt, and screenwriter on the BRZRKR film Mattson Tomlin, Matt Gagnon (editor-in-chief, BOOM! Studios), Eric Harburn (executive editor, BOOM! ‘Stranger Things’ books

Little Demon

It’s been long prophesized that a malevolent force would alter the universe for the rest of time, and you can get a front-row seat! FXX celebrates its newest animated comedy, Little Demon, by heading to the metaphysical realm of San Diego in advance of its premiere later this summer. Thirteen years after being impregnated by Satan (Danny DeVito), a reluctant mother, Laura (Aubrey Plaza), and her Antichrist daughter, Chrissy (Lucy DeVito), attempt to live an ordinary life in Delaware but are constantly thwarted by monstrous forces, including Satan, who yearns for custody of his daughter’s soul. C.B. Cebulski (editor-in-chief) is here to answer your burning questions! Come to inquire about everything and anything you ever wanted to know about the Marvel Universe. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Just one month prior to the theatrical release of “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” hear members of the cast and crew offer stories and insights from the film and an exclusive look at the first 20 minutes. Hall H, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

‘Archer’

“Archer,” the award-winning animated comedy series, returns to San Diego in celebration of its upcoming 13th season! This year, Archer and The Agency have been acquired by the spy conglomerate known as IIA and struggle to find their identity. Will they be able to maintain their independence, or will they succumb to their corporate overlords? There will be an exclusive screening of the season 13 opener, followed by a spirited Q&A with H. Wesley Snipes’ ‘The Exiled’

The star and producer of the Blade franchise returns to comics with a new original series, “The Exiled.” Wesley Snipes joins his co-creators Adam Lawson (The Kill Journal, Escape the Night), and Keith Arem (Ascend, Dead Speed) to discuss the new comic and crafting a sci-fi noir tale. Room 6DE, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Directors on Directing

Tim Miller (director of Deadpool, creator of Love, Death + Robots), Andrew Stanton (director of Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and John Carter), and Chad Stahelski (director of the John Wick franchise) take part in a wide-ranging and in-depth discussion about the craft of directing and projects past, present, and future. Moderated by Collider’s editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub. Hall H, 6-7 p.m.

Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards

The 34th annual Eisner Awards (the “Oscars” of the comics industry) honor comics creators and works in 33 categories. The gala ceremony features celebrity presenters and a multimedia extravaganza. Other prestigious awards to be given out include the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award, the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comics Writing, and the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.
