Rooftop Cinema Club offers earlier showtimes for family-friendly films
Rooftop Cinema Club is making some big changes: audiences of all-ages will now be able to enjoy an evening of cinema under the stars.
The popular series — officially titled Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero at the Manchester Grand Hyatt — has unveiled a brand new, state-of-the-art LED screen which allows movies to be screened at earlier times, making it easier for families to enjoy early evening matinee showings.
In addition to the 8 and 10:30 p.m. screenings, all-ages 5 p.m. matinees have been added to the schedule.
The new screen officially debuted on Aug. 2 with a screening of “Raya and the Last Dragon.” Other family-friendly films on the lineup include “Shrek,” “The Lion King,” “Up,” “Big Hero 6,” “Sing,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Moana,” “Aladdin” and more.
And for older audiences, Rooftop Cinema Club is still screening classics like “Step Brothers,” “Old School,” “Superbad,” “Anchorman,” and “Dumb and Dumber,” among others.
Rooftop Cinema Club also screens themed movies for special occasions. On Teen Tuesdays, classic coming-of-age flicks like “Mean Girls,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “13 Going on 30” and more are offered, while during Back to School Week (Aug. 9 through 15), school-themed movies like “10 Things I Hate About You,” “School of Rock,” “The Breakfast Club” and more are on the docket.
Not wanting to miss out on freaky flicks around Halloween, Rooftop Cinema is celebrating “Summerween” from Aug. 27 through 29 with showings of “Hocus Pocus,” “Beetlejuice,” “The Shining” and other scary movies. On Aug. 8, celebrate International Cat Day with a screening of “Cats,” and on Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26, enjoy the classic female baseball comedy, “A League of Their Own.”
Movie-goers can also grab food and drinks from the concessions stand, which is presented by the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. You can enjoy a charcuterie board while sipping on craft beers and cocktails, or opt for classic movie staples like candy and popcorn. You can also get there early to play table games and take photos with one of the best city views as your backdrop.
COVID safety protocols are still in place, with limited capacity to enable social distancing (which means movies sell out fast!), online ticketing and contact-free and cashless options for concessions. Sanitation stations are found throughout the venue and masked employees are there to assist. Headphones are sanitized after each use and individually wrapped. And while Rooftop Cinema Club has suspended offering pillows and blankets to viewers, they’re encouraged to bring their own from home for chilly nights.
Tickets range in price from $17.50 to $25 for various showings and promotions. For those looking for a more intimate viewing experience with friends or a date, a double-size loveseat and 46 oz. popcorn is available for $24 per ticket (Sundays through Thursdays) or $25 per ticket (Fridays and Saturdays). These tickets must be purchased in pairs. Finally, family-friendly screenings offer tickets for $13.50 for those under 12. Military and student discounts also available.
Tickets for all films through Sept. 6 are now on sale at rooftopcinemaclub.com/embarcadero.
