British staging of much-revived Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will get a short run at the Civic Theatre downtown
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock-opera spectacle about the last days in Christ’s life has been revived three times on Broadway since its 1971 premiere. But unlike most touring shows that hit town, this latest “Jesus Christ Superstar” is not a Broadway spinoff.
Instead, it was launched in London and now has hit the road to celebrate the original concept album’s 50th anniversary next year. The tour brings it to the San Diego Civic Theatre for a six-day run beginning Tuesday.
Aaron LaVigne, whose credits include Broadway’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” stars as Jesus, opposite James Delisco Beeks (of Broadway’s “Kinky Boots,” “Ragtime” and others) as Judas.
Timothy Sheader directs the production, which won Britain’s Olivier Award as best musical revival in 2017.
