The 16th annual San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival announced the winners of the 2019 Taco TKO Competition held Nov. 17 at the Embarcadero’s Lane Field Park.

More than 800 people sampled 10 different tacos from 10 of San Diego’s top taco makers: Miss B’s Coconut Club, Global City Tacos, Volcano Rabbit, Casa Dorada, Sandbar Sports Bar & Grill, Curadero, Carte Blanche, PB Fish Shop, Global Tacos Grill and Caliano.

They were judged by chef Claudia Sandoval from MasterChef Latino, Not Not Taco’s Sam “the Cooking Guy” Zien and Ken Loyst, producer of the festival. Southern Italian and Mexican cuisine food truck Caliano won first place in the Judge’s Choice category with its savory pork belly taco, topped with smoked potato and guacamole salsa.


Pacific Beach Fish Shop took first place in the People’s Choice category for its mahi elote taco with signature seasoning, cilantro white sauce, light cabbage and elote pico topped with Cotija cheese. Other winners: Judge’s Choice: Volcano Rabbit, second place; and Curadero, third place; People’s Choice: Curadero, second place; and Carte Blanche, third place. Carte Blanche was also named the winner of the Awesome Sauce Competition.
